NYC Women's March 2019
January 19, 2019; a windy day, the cold sent bitter chills down the backs of many. Men, women, and children bundled up, their warm hearts and excited spirits keeping them toasty. People began to gather in Foley Square at around 10 AM, anticipating the passionate afternoon ahead. Further uptown, another crowd thickened by Central Park. One a rally, and one a march—both for women’s rights. I attended the rally in Foley Square, and the energy of the attendees, as well as the speakers and performers, was absolutely amazing. So many powerful thoughts were shared, and it became truly evident how much really needs to be changed in our society. Agunda Okeyo, the Director of the NYC Women’s March, put together an inspiring rally, with speakers such as the Feminist writer, activist, and organizer Gloria Steinem, the riveting and bold poet Staceyann Chin, the youngest Congresswoman in U.S. history—Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and a multitude of grassroot organizations. These were mixed in with performances from the Resistance Revival Chorus and Maku Sound System, helping to keep the energy and spirits of the protesters high.
