about.
hm. where to begin?
~
Pure Nowhere is… a diary. A mosh-pit. A home. An empty film camera. A photo-plastered bedroom. A water-stained book. An all-nighter. A cracked skateboard. A lingering moment. A feeling.
We began in 2016, as a local music blog run out of Kyla’s teenage bedroom in San Diego. Around this time, Kyla met Abby (hello!) through Instagram, and over the course of a hundred late-night conversations fractured by timezones, we embraced a creative collaboration and close friendship — re-launching Pure Nowhere together as an expansive online magazine in mid-2017.
Now, nearly 6 years into this journey (and only just recently entering adulthood ourselves), it’s more difficult to define what we are and what we do. At the heart of Pure Nowhere is an intense urge to create from a place of vulnerability, to share stories and raw feelings, and connect people through intimacy. Currently, we exist online, in-print and in-person, but find the most joy in blurring the lines between these three planes and curating projects that bridge the gaps. You can find our creations scattered across this site, our instagram, and adrift in the physical world.
Less of a magazine and more of an evolving community/creative platform, Pure Nowhere continues to be made from opposite sides of the world (Melbourne and LA) by two best friends, with the help of a magical international creative family. Through FaceTime and the internet, we’ve thrown sold-out shows in multiple cities, released a sold-out magazine, built a collaborative team of 70+ young creatives, arranged press at some of the worlds biggest festivals, and lived together for a month. All because of a DM on Instagram.

Pure Nowhere’s been on a semi-hiatus since December 2020. It felt like a difficult time to be creating from the heart, when we were at our least inspired. Currently, we’re devoting these last few months of 2021 to launching a publishing company and production house, developing several print projects and a short film, and re-imagining our website and instagram. We look forward to sharing all of this and more with you. <3

Actually, that was us a few years ago, when we were briefly in the same city (and had brown hair).
Usually, we look something more like this:
