Seeing her small, intimate corner of an intimidating and noisy city left such a big impression on me. I felt inspired and honored to be invited into her safe haven, hidden between the crowded crosswalks and noisy Izakayas.

The Transformation of Jerry Paper, 2016-2019

In front of a crowd of about 35 people, Paper stood alone wearing a colorful lei, purple silk kimono, and some long black socks and began to play his ballads at a tiny synth and mic. He started to sing and move around and I was awestruck. Who was this guy? How did he do this, make this music, dream these dreams?

I suppose I always have a goal to photograph other people more than I do when I take my camera out, but I tend to end up stuck in my head and just snap pictures of my surroundings––In this case, Rochester, Montreal, Albany, and Chicago––with just a few of friends and strangers and always a self-portrait or two.
