Margaret and Nathan Interview Transcription
Margaret: Okay. What’s your name?
Nathan: My name?
Margaret: Yeah.
Nathan: Nathan.
Margaret: Okay. I’m Margaret.
Nathan: You’re-- okay. Oh, it’s-- okay.
Margaret: ‘Cause you have to introduce yourself… Okay. Um, you read the first question.
Nathan: When did you realize you were in love with me? Question one.
Margaret: I don’t know. I guess when we were at 79th and we were just spending all our time together.
Nathan: Mhm.
Margaret: And then you were playing Solitaire a lot, and then I was just like, I’m gonna tell him I loved him if he wins this round of Solitaire, and then I did, and then you said, “Thanks.” (they laugh) Okay, what about you?
Nathan: Um, I think for me, it was probably when we moved into Ingraham.
Margaret: Oh yeah, that’s. I thought- I thought that was so late, I was like--
Nathan: Yeah no, I mean I had a lot of fun, I think we bonded a lot here at your mom’s, when we were living in the-- (Margaret: Room.) in the room. So then I think when we moved out, it was like… solidified.
Margaret: Mm, yeah that makes sense.
Nathan: At Ingraham.
Margaret: Okay, so then how would you describe me to someone who has never met me?
Nathan: Um, I’d be like, “Oh, you know, it’s Margaret, you know? You know how she be. You know how she do. She be like, taking pictures and stuff. And then, she drives me, she goes, “Vrooom!’”. And that’s what I would say. Verbatim.
Margaret: That’s not what you would say.
Nathan: Verbatim! That’s what I would say.
Margaret: It’s really not.
Nathan: They be like, “Ooo, Margaret?”, and I be like, “Yeah! You know, baby mama, mmm.” That’s what I would say.
Margaret: ‘Kay.
Nathan: What would you say? How would you.
Margaret: Um, I would say you’re a baker.
Nathan: Ohhh.
Margaret: And then I would probably say something like (Nathan: Yeah, I guess that makes sense. (he laughs)) he’s a little like... standoffish, ‘cause you’re a little reserved. Um, but that... you’re okay, I guess.
Nathan: Yeah, that sounds about right.
Nathan (cont’d): No, you do that one. Margaret: I just-- no, no I just read the last question. (Nathan: Oh, did you?) How would you describe--
Nathan: What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve made for me?
Margaret: I don’t know. (she laughs) You don’t want… Um, the biggest sacrifice I’ve made for you… I feel like-- (Nathan: I think-- How about we combine this answer?) I feel like— and it’s the baby!
Nathan: The biggest sacrifice we’ve made for ourselves is… uh… (Margaret: Deciding to have the baby.) Yeah, deciding to have the baby, because, (Margaret: Yeah.) that is-- (Margaret: ‘Cause I feel like you--) the ultimate. (Margaret: Yeah.)
Margaret: Plus, I feel like you-- I never gave up anything for you, (Nathan: No.) you know what I mean? (Nathan: Yeah.) I feel like we both were like, “Okay, let’s buckle down and have a baby,”.
Nathan: We both put aside (Margaret: A lot.) a lot of things, (Margaret: Yeah.) because we had a child together. (Margaret: Right, right.) So, that’s-- that’s-- Ohpe, it stopped recording.
Margaret: Goddammit… No, it didn’t.
Nathan: Oh. (Margaret: Whoops.) That’s gonna be fun.
Margaret: Um, we probably have to redo it.
Nathan: Okay, and the last one--
Margaret: Is- how has isolation changed our relationship?
Nathan: Well, the funny thing is, is that this isn’t the first time that I’ve been laid off of work for like two to three months at a time, (Margaret: Yeah.) so, I feel like not much has changed.
Margaret: It wasn’t that long.
Nathan: How long was it? It was like two months.
Margaret: No…
Nathan: Well it was at least like a month and a half.
Margaret: It was like a month, but yeah. I feel like we’re fine. I feel like it hasn’t changed.
Nathan: If anything, the house is cleaner.
Margaret: Yeah. (they laugh)
Nathan: The dishes get done, that’s the big difference. If anything, this puppy dog… she be like going out more and stuff too.
Margaret: Yeah. I don’t think it’s changed our relationship.
Nathan: Not really.
Nathan (cont’d): Do you want to say something, Juniper? Go on, speak your peace.
Juniper: (licks the microphone)
Nathan: Excellent.
Margaret: She has nothing to say to you.
Nathan: You’re so well-spoken, Juniper, I love it.
Margaret: Okay, thank you, bye.
Nathan: Bye!
